Always Ask Questions

Questions are a key part of the hiring process. At each stage, you should be ready to ask at least 2 questions — especially during the interview process. To be well prepared, have 5–6 quality questions ready to ask, as some may have been answered during the interview.

The single most important question to end EVERY SINGLE INTERVIEW is to ask for next steps: “Can you describe the next steps in the interviewing process?” DON’T be afraid to ask questions! This shows that you did your research, prepared for the interview, and are interested in the position and company.  

Example Questions 

  • How long have you been with the company?
  • Can you describe the company culture?
  • What are the day-to-day responsibilities of the position?
  • Can you discuss the structure and organization of the team?
  • Where do you see the direction of the team/company growing?
  • What learning and development opportunities are available in this role?

Questions NOT to Ask

You know the saying, “No question is a dumb question.” While that is true, there are some questions you should steer away from asking the interviewer(s):

  • Salary questions – Let the recruiter offer you a range; it’s the first step in negotiating.
  • Questions that start with “Why?” – These kinds of questions put people on the defensive.
  • Will you monitor my social networking? – It gives the impression you have something to hide.
  • How soon do you promote employees? – You don’t want to sound arrogant or entitled.
