Interview Strategy

What It Is…

An interview strategy is simply how you plan to execute the interview. As you create a written outline (not word-for-word) of important points to cover in your interview, you give careful consideration to the value and importance of interviewing to your job search.

It involves doing your prep work, knowing what information YOU want to get out of the interview, and having the confidence to execute your plan. Time is limited, so being direct and intentional in your approach is critical to having an effective and successful interview.

Use the 5 ‘S’ Formula

STORY: What is your career story?

STATEMENT OF VALUE: What do you bring to the table? (Pull this straight from your resume and LinkedIn bio.)

STRUCTURE/SITUATIONS: Pick three experiences from your career that are significant to the role you’ve applied for.

SKILLS: What is your expertise? If you are unsure, reach out to your Talent Partner for a Skills Assessment.

SENIORITY: Own it! Be confident in the experience you have.

Building Rapport

Building rapport is very important. Do some research on your interviewer through social media and the company website. See what common ground you can find to talk about in the beginning of the interview. (Examples: Hey, I see we both went to OU. I noticed you love the New England Patriots; they are my favorite team too. I noticed you are an avid runner; I just finished my first marathon.) Relax! This is just a CONVERSATION. Enjoy it! SMILE a lot and often. Showcase your energy and personality.
