Resumes and ATS

A resume is an opportunity for you to showcase your skills and experience. In most cases, this is the first impression recruiters have of you, and it serves to convince the hiring team you’re right for an interview.

Today, a lot of resume review is handled by an ATS (Applicant Tracking System). This  software helps to sort applications to create a short list of “good fits.” When a candidate makes the short list, the hiring team may only see a computer-generated summary. The bottom line is, you have to do what you can to make yourself stand out.

Resume Checklist

  • Current Contact Details – Include full name, email address, phone number, and LinkedIn profile.
  • Statement of Value – This is your overview or summary. Explain where you have been, where you want to go, and what you offer as a candidate. Show your personality!
  • Education and Certifications – List highest level of education first. Only include your high school education if you don’t have a college degree.
  • Experience – Work experience should showcase your professional career. Craft 3 strong bullet points to highlight accomplishments. Show %’s, $ amounts, timelines, etc… any numbers that showcase achievements. Include  relevant roles from the past 10–15 years. You want a story, not a novel!
  • Skills – Focus on your expertise and core competencies that relate to the job to which you are applying.

Resume Do’s

  • Tailor resumes to the role.
  • Use keywords from the job description.
  • Keep the resume to one or two pages.
  • Keep the tense and structure  consistent.
  • Use simple formatting.
